Chronicles

The series “Chronicles:” began in the 1990s and was first inspired by my new urban surroundings and by the politics of the of that time. Having left Texas for the first time for graduate school, I ended up in New York City. This required a lot of adjustments for me, but the fundamental shift also provided tremendous - and novel - visual and intellectual richness. I was very aware of feeling like an outsider, but this also made it easier for me to be an observer, which directly fed my art and my science.

The series quickly transitioned to purely political work, starting with the beating of Rodney King in 1991. Having lived in the small sheltered town of Plano, TX, I had no awareness of police brutality against Black Americans. I had been raised by liberal, accepting parents from New York, but this was completely new to me and tilted a significant portion of my artwork towards social justice for decades to come.

I have added to this more overtly political series for several decades and will continue to do so.
